I asked myself, am I successful ? It was a tough question. As husband, I asked my wife. She said, still in progress. As a son, I asked my parents. Am I successful? My Achan said, Dont worry, you have a life a head. What does that mean?
Ladies and Gentlemen, Success has many aspects. I asked my team members. They praised me, They have to as they report to me. I have asked to my partners, they didnt have an answer.
I sat down and thought, Am I really succeessful ? Some times I feel I am successful. Then after some times I feel I am too slow. I could have acheived all this much faster.
This made me think, Why am I taking a long time to acheive my milestones. I got my first promotion much faster because I was eager to learn and work. then I have slow down. My search for this reached at few chapters in the book - 'What got you here, Wont Get you there' by Marshal Goldsmith.
Mr. Goldsmith is an Executive coach and he worked with top executives in the world. He have found that success has troubles. Once become success as a leader, you will develop these four troubles:
- Belive in Skills
- Confidence
- Motivation
- Free Choice to Succed
These makes you superstitious.
Successful people says it I have Successed, I have Succeed. they tell this at the subconcious level even if the success happened because of their team member and no contribution from them.
Successful people have the confidence that as personality, whatever they touch it ends up in success. They have the magic ward to turn everything to succeed even when they really do not have the personna.
They know that once they are successful and they have the confidenc to be successful. No doubt that they will be successful in the future as well. This is the big issue, if you have a manager like this. when he crack the joke. wheather that is a joke or not - you are expected to laugh.
Successful person believe that I have the choice to be successful. Whatever they do, they have to choice to make and they always play to win.
These Four aspects make the winners superstitious. Yes, if it happens are right balance. It is good. But winner have a trouble of taking it for granted. There are winners will not take it to the head. They would not get in to this trap of success and belive in law of nature. They will be ready to fail and raise the benchmark. Instead of choose to succed they will choose to change and upgrade themselves. They take success as Journey not a destination.
After reading to these chapters, I have seen. Whenever I fall in to success in my career. I trap myself in to superstitious of success and stay there for some time. Thats really delaying my journey as a leader. Have you fall in to this success trap ?
