Most of us think working under pressure or bad managers are not good. But I think we should work under pressure and of course under bad managers as well. I had fortune to work under so called bad managers for quite some time. Again when I say bad manager, it is subjective. But I have named bad manager only after measuring on an article I read in Times career supplement a while ago. Some of excerpts are bad managers find only negatives in their reportes, they won’t take any responsibility, they will be biased, they will be on theories and talk themselves high but team results will be in red etc... Luckily I have understood that article quickly and I become a good at identify bad managers.
I thought one of my mangers is very bad and all of my team members including me started looking other opportunity. I got an opportunity in other department in the same company and I have moved there without thinking much. In this course of time I have got a lot of learning in terms what a manager should not do and what action will be failure for a team. Even during that phase one of my friends in the same team used to say that we should thank god that we got a bad manager during the first phase career to make us understand that what all we should not do. This philosophy should be written in golden words. Actually very true, good managers make you comfortable and show you what is good work but we may not understand what is bad. So you will receive good things from the boss and would treat badly your reportees. Definitely if you go wrong way good managers will identify immediately. So the bottom line is you should be lucky enough to work under a bad manager to understand what all you shouldn’t do.
After I have moved to my new team, thing were almost same. In addition to that there were a lot extra relationships with in that department. Again it is an opportunity to understand why we should have an optimal level or professional relationship within the colleagues. I used to think that the important thing is all team members should have a minimum level of affection and there is no maximum limit for that affection. I got opportunity to understand that it is very danger if any colleagues / peers have a relationship beyond the optimum level. It may be good for those individuals but it is very danger for the team, it is a cancer to the entire team.
These things actually will not occur if a department has a good manager but if that manager doing these things then only god can save that department. So I am confused who is a good manager. I got to know a lot of things which a good manager should not do. So what a good manager should do? it is a question mark now! But I am clear another aspect. Good manager will have the ability to bring positive results for team without all the above issues.
